While I have not had the chance yet to meet Riel Nason in person, I have seen one of her quilts in real life - at Quilt Canada - and it was fantastic. Riel is creative and playful in her designs, and reading about them on her blog - The Q and the U - has always made me smile. Riel is a Canadian, living in a small town on Canada's east coast in New Brunswick.
When Riel asked me if I would share a review of her new book, Modern Selvage Quilting - I jumped at the chance. Riel is not just a quilter, she is also a published fiction author too. Her quilting book is full of her own voice and her own stories. It is a pleasure to read and funny too. All the photos in this post are from the book.
Riel points out that selvages are just another kind of fabric scrap. Modern Selvage Quilting provides you with advice on how to save your selvages and how to select and use them in projects. Riel provides three different methods for effectively piecing the selvages and each is clever, fully illustrated and easy to execute.
There are instructions for several projects in the book as well, from pincushions to pillows to placemats to quilts. Riel shares many tips as well, all of which focus on using selvages easily and effectively. While Riel gave me a copy of her book for this review, I would have bought my own copy if she had not. If you are interested in selvage quilting, this is the book to get.
Now I have to admit to not saving many selvages, although I have a few jars of the prettiest ones. But, armed with this new book, I might just have to change my practices - the projects are just so appealing.
Riel asked me which quilt I would make if I had an unlimited supply of selvages. I have to say that I am in love with that giant star and it might just be the push I need to save my selvages.

I have been saving selvages for a long time but have never designated them for any project. However, once in a while I will stitch or glue one to an otherwise blank greeting card and voila-- fun stationery!

I have tons of selvage so saved. Probably more than I can ever use! I've started one project, where I'm sewing salvages to a foundation - 12" x 12" foundation blocks. I've made about 18-20 blocks and need 35, for what I think will be a table cloth. I only work on it at retreats, and have had lots of other projects, so it's been on a back burner for a while.
I save all my salvages and give half of them to a friend in my guild, who has made two beautiful selvage quilts. She's now the guild selvage keeper, and anybody who wants to use selvages can get some from her.

I was saving my selvages for the longest time, but I gave them all to a fellow quilter that was working on a project and needed them. I haven't been saving them since then. I look at them each time I cut them off and think, "oh what a pretty bag this would make". I would love to make a nice tote with them for all of my travel quilting supplies.

I don't usually save selvedges (unless they're very special) because I tend to need as much width of fabric as I can get; and I also seem to always get the FQ without the pretty selvedge! I may start collecting them!

I started saving my salvages about a year ago. I usually cut 1 inch width including the selvage before cutting out the project pieces. Quilts ideas in the book look great.
I didn't have any selvages till this week, when I bought a metre of cotton fabric, usually I get batiks.This would be a fabulous book to own, and with international readers included, a really wonderful give-away.
I've saved a small number of selvages but have plenty of fabric that has them intact, so I could amass a decent collection if I spent some time slicing and dicing! Riel's book looks very interesting and might be just the push I need to try a selvage project! Also, I loved her first novel, and I'm looking forward to reading the second one.

I don't save my selvages. To be honest, I have the tendency to go overboard with the things I save, so when I saw this selvage-saving begin, I decided not to join in. But I have a dear friend who has "wished" for this book, so I've been saving my selvages for the last month or so, and I'm going to give her a copy of this wonderful book along with however many selvages I have saved by that time, and that will be it for me and selvages. Or at least, that's the plan.
I started saving them a few months ago, but used them for the first time this past weekend, when I made a bookshelf mini-quilt. I used the selvages for the book titles and I just love how they look!

I have only recently started saving my selvages, but , to be honest, I never really had any selvages worth saving. Within the last year or so, I have being buying designer fabric, just because I fell in love with the designs or colours, with no real real projects in mind. At the beginning of this year, I was bit by the quilting bug and have started to learn to quilt. I started saving my selvages after following the blog by Crazy Quilt Mom.
