It's the second Tuesday of the month, and time for the Scraptastic Tuesday link up hosted by Nicky - Mrs. Sew and Sow and me.
I spent some time this last weekend working on my magenta and navy courthouse steps quilt. I started this quilt with a bundle of fat quarters from Fabric Spark, and as the quilt grew I had to start looking for more fabrics to use and turned to my scraps.
I purposely did not plan out the layout or colour placement of this quilt. I wanted to try for an asymmetrical sort of arrangement in a very symmetrical traditional pattern. As each block is added, I decide then what colours and fabrics to use next.
My courthouse steps blocks start with a 2" cut square and 2" strips cut at 5", 8", 11" and 14". The blocks are 14" square unfinished, which is an odd size perhaps but I like the proportions.
I realized as I was making this quilt that I could start planning another and start cutting strips from my scraps and new purchases as I used those fabrics for other projects. I know the idea of organizing scraps into cut strips is well recommended but I have resisted as I did not think I would ever use them. But now I see if I have a scrappy project in mind, I could organize my scraps with that in mind.

I don't think I've ever made courthouse steps ... yours is so striking!
ReplyDeleteI’m smitten with your courthouse step blocks! Today I made a digital paper piecing template for a 6,25" finished little block.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely bigger! Love the way this is coming together.
ReplyDeletePink is such a happy colour! These blocks are really glowing Leanne, and quite different from some of your other recent makes! Keep going, it would make a great statement on a bed! (Can't get that linky to work yet-waiting for my computer to be upgraded! Ugh!)
ReplyDeleteBigger is better! It's going to a fun quilt!
ReplyDeleteBigger. This is looking great.
ReplyDeleteLots and lots of stitching in those blocks. Looking great
ReplyDeleteI love these courthouse steps! I am with you in terms of having a project in mind before chopping up scraps into certain sizes. When I started sorting my scraps, it was so overwhelming to see how much was there. I started feeling better about it when I started to identify projects and make plans for each bin.
ReplyDeleteCourthouse steps is such a good pattern. It looks so different with repeated fabrics in the steps. Good idea to precut scraps for an identified project. Thanks for hosting the linky party
ReplyDeleteSo pretty!
ReplyDeleteWow! Love how this is coming together!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I could handle the asymmetry, I would keep trying to evenly distribute the colours. I like keeping 2.5" strips and squares, they're very handy.
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be a fabulous quilt!
ReplyDeleteJust added courthouse steps to my bucket list. This is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteMore from me. As if I haven't said enough.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to my above comments--try it on point.
