atmosphere. Here it is, finished. I realized it was not finished until it was washed.
This little quilt is 13.5" x 16" and is made from various cotton bits and Kona white.
You can see how the washing added character, lines and bumps and misalignments. Sort of like the atmosphere, beautiful, mostly empty but not perfect.
Here it is before I washed it. I was just not loving that flatness.
And although I love this picture of the flatness, it was just not right. I debated a long time, almost a week, because I knew once I washed it I would never see this flatness again.
You can see the difference now. It went in the washer and the dryer, somewhat beat up, like the real atmosphere.
It is hard to quilt the elements, I am going to have to try again soon.
This quilt was inspired by Svetlana from s.o.t.a.k. handmade's wonderful little quilt - click here to go and check it out now, I will wait. I was also inspired by Svetlana's inspiration - Yoshiko Jinzenji and her book Quilting Line and Color.
Edited: I am entering this little quilt in the Modern Mini Challenge that Jennifer at Ellison Lane Quilts has been running all month. Everyone has made such beautiful quilts, looking at all of them will be so fun.
I have more little quilts on a charcoal background planned, but it was nice to use white as well. I think I have more of these to make too.
I have linked this post up to Megan at Canoe Ridge Creations' {Sew} Modern Monday. There are wonderful projects there, I hope you go and have a look.
I am going to link this to Heather and Megan at Fabric Tuesday as well, it looks like there are several lovely projects there already.

I've just quilted using straight lines (not as straight as yours I might add!) and it came out all wrinkly just the same. Love it!
Beautiful x
This is stunning
The simplicity of this is breathtaking L! And you're right, it looks even better washed! Jxo
I like it before and after washing, its just a striking quilt. But you are right, it totally changes the design!
Very cool (as in chilly) looking - thanks for the link, just realised THAT was the book I was given for Christmas...now feeling I want to delve in and make something!!
You are right, the washing just makes it! Something like this would be perfect on my living room wall once we redecorate - thank you for the inspiration! Being in Scotland, rain would be my element...
Beautiful and totally atmospheric!
Brilliant :-)
Stunning in all it's crinkly, in-flat beauty! Love it!
Un-flat!!! Ugh, darn auto correct!!
Ooh, love the sparse improviness of this, it looks fab, especially with the heavy quilting
At first glance, this took my breath away! How awesome, Leanne - you just keep inspiring me, quilt after quilt!
Oh, I so love this! The quilting looks great. I love the colors. This is just really super cool :-)
Lovely. I'm with you on the flat and washed looks. Its give it that something extra. I've also realised I haven't washed any of my mini quilts....
wow. ok maybe I should have spelled that in capitals - it's really a lovely quilt.
fantastic
Leanne, it looks fantastic. Love what you did with those triangles, so fun and modern looking.
glorious! xox
As usual Leanne, I love everything you are doing! I have that book too, and really must start using it for some inspiration. Thanks for sharing your projects with us.
Absolutely gorgeous Leanne!
Just lovely. I really like how it makes you take a second look.
Oh, wow! Such a lovely quilt!
Wow, I love this!! The spare design is gorgeous, and the quilting is just amazing - I would have had a hard time washing it too, but I agree that it looks great with a little crinkle!
Leanne. This is just fabulous. I love what the washing/drying did, and I love your words that you used to describe this beautiful quilt.
I love it. It's so full of air, if you know what I mean. I think washing it added a touch of softness, too.
Washing is like magic for these kinds of quilts. Luv it!!!
It looks wonderful and love everything about it. I am curious to know what stitch length you use on your machine ? I normally use a 3.5 on my Horizon and am thinking of increasing it actually to increase the hand stitched look of it.
That is fabulous, Leanne. I love the starkness of it. And the quilting is perfect for it. All around win.
This is an absolutely charming quilt!
gorgeous!!!!!!!
Very stunning. I love the little pops of prints! I never use white in my quilting, although, every time I see it, I love it. I am going to have to incorporate white soon!
Lovely quilt! I like the name you gave it too.
Stunning, and I love your thoughts behind the design and its name. A beautiful mini...the texture is gorgeous.
Love the simple beauty of it. You can teach my girls the less is more theory in June!
This is such a beautiful design - love the quilting and the soft colours!
This is a lovely design, I particularly like the inner border lines
Leanne it is lovely and the name is so fitting. Glad you washed it- I like the texture it added. Good luck in the challenge! Thanks for entering!
How did I miss this one...I love it!
