Making a quilt back as winter begins

ROYGBIV back - onto the "B"

This is the back for my ROYGBIV quilt so far.  It is one huge log cabin. There are some challenges when making a log cabin block this large out of mostly 2.5" strips. Careful pressing and trimming of each log is necessary or it quickly develops a small ripple that grows quickly to a large and unmanageable ripple. I know this because this is really the second try at this back.

It is currently about 58" squarish and I am using up all the extra strips I cut up for the blocks for the front. When I get back from a work trip I can start with the "B" (blue).

I am finding quilt backs an interesting challenge, as once the quilt front is done I want to be quilting it, not making a back. I think I am going to try starting the back when I start the front next time and see how that goes.

We finally had snow

This was the view from my family room yesterday morning. Finally our first snow, which is a record here, the previous latest for first snow was November 6. Although I live downtown, the house next door has this tiny forest, which brings many interesting birds to watch all year round. I am going to try to so the view from my window photos that I have seen other bloggers doing every so often - that way I can remember the changes. Especially since I think that they are developing that beautiful lot into 8 homes, hopefully some of the trees survive.

Enjoy your Sunday, I am back home late Tuesday night.

Best,

Leanne

That is amazing work Leanne! It is really hard to keep something that big from ruffling!

Gorgeous. I can verify the bubble effect having done it several times myself. Shudder - I am just not ready for snow yet!

I applaud your giant log cabin - I have only been aware of all these pieced backs since my blogging increased early this year, it is almost like making 2 quilts.

And snow?? Brrrrr.

What an awesome back that is going to be!

Snow, hey? I see you're from Alberta - my sister lives in Calgary so I'm quite familiar with what a Alberta winter can be like!

Looks wonderful! I kinda think what Sheila said, to me doing such a complicated pieced back isn't doing a back, its doing a double sided quilt!!

wow, ambitious! i usually just make the back as super simple as i can without making it too small. that giant log cabin block will make it hard to tell which side of the quilt is the "front"! it looks so good!

Your log cabin is lovely. It's wonderful how you're echoing the theme on the back.

Your back yard view is wonderful. I love it when the fairy frost shows up on the trees.

Wow! I would have to hang that quilt in the middle of the room just so I could admire both sides equally. The back is GORGEOUS!!!

Leanne, that back is insane!! I so need to make one just like it, but as a top. I'm happy with boring, easy backs!

And I'm kind of jealous of the snow. As much as I disliked winter in Kamloops, the first snow of the year was always magic.

That is one hell of a back!! I'd settle for that as the front and a plain back for sure!

I love this back - could be a front too, it's so pretty! I just hopped over from the Modern Blocks Bee flickr group - looks like we'll be in the bee together! Looking forward to it...

Your backs are better than my fronts!

I do believe that is the most impressive back I have ever seen for a quilt Leanne! Sorry it kept getting wonky on you, but I understand completely how that could happen!
