Puppies, Boys and Monkeys Quilt

Puppies, Boys and Monkeys Quilt

This quilt, for my 13 year old is all done, fresh from the wash, all bumpy and soft! He is letting me get away with this cute fabric, I think partly because it is so grayish and he seems to like the red and yellow bits. Mostly he loves quilts and is happy to have one of his own.

It is big, this is draped across my king size bed. (I would measure it but none of my 10,000 tape measures are anywhere to be found!) It should be large enough to sleep under and cuddle under watching TV or reading a book. The pattern, which I mostly followed, at least until the layout stage, is by Faith at Fresh Lemons Quits.

I have wanted to try improvisational piecing, the kind where you have no plan and just put stuff together. So I did the back that way. It is not so cute and I really like it.

I made up strips and parts that I then fit together. After one set-in seam, I learned to go for blocks that would seam in straight lines, which are a lot easier.

You can see the binding in this picture, I used a light gray that is in blocks on the back, but is not used on the front. Generally I use darker bindings than the quilts, but I like this effect too.

Here is a close up of the quilting and the fabric.

There are many more pictures of this quilt, both before and after washing, here if you want to take a look.

Lynne from Lily's Quilts is hosting a new, once a month Fresh Sewing Day event where people can show off a project done in the month that made them happy. This project makes me happy, so it certainly qualifies.

There are many other great projects there, by very talented quilters. You should go over and take a look, just click the button.

I'm adding a link to Fabric Tuesday. The projects at that link groups are also made by quilters who are so talented, they often inspire me and I hope you will like them too.

  6. Lovely quilt. I've pieced the back on my latest quilt, too, which I think makes it even better since you really can use it either side up. I'm quilting that one right now. Your son should love it.

I know about missing tape measures...
